Surah Al An'aam (Ayah 43) Hardening of the Hearts

(43)Then why, when Our punishment came to them, did they not humble themselves? But their hearts became hardened, and Satan made attractive to them that which they were doing.

Summary of Ayat:  Allah says in the Quran; How come it was not the the case that when Allah sent down difficulties over them, their hearts did not become humble? On the contrary they became hard. It was because Shaytan beautified their deeds for their deeds for them.

Condition of a hard heart :

  • A hard heart is more hard than a rock.
  • A soft heart can again turn hard.

How can you test the condition of your heart?

You know your heart is soft when:
  • You like to spend time alone in remembrance of Allah.
  • You recite the Quran and contemplate on it's Ayats (showing reaction such as weeping or rejoicing according to the message in it)
  • You like to be in the company of the Righteous ( Religious gatherings, study group etc.)
What are the causes for the heart to become hard?

Some of the causes are:
  1. At the time of a calamity, a person does not remember Allah and does not ask for His help. Instead takes help of some other source other than Allah.
  2. When a person reaches that level where he does a wrong deed or commits a sins and is still happy with what he has done without any regret. This is because Shaytan beautifies that deed for him.
  3. When a person starts becoming arrogant. (He does not answer to the Salam. He avoids smiling or being kind to others, shows no mercy and is proud of himself)

What is the treatment for a hard heart | How to make a hard heart soft?

  1. Reciting Quran with meaning and contemplation. (Understanding and implementing the verses of Quran in our daily life).
  2. Remembering Death. (attending funeral)
  3. Dhikr of Allah. (includes Salah, recitation of Quran, morning & evening remembrance, tahajjud, istighfar, tasbeeh etc.
  4. Being in the company of believers. ( Quran study group, weekly islamic lectures etc)
  5. Showing more mercy towards the weaker section of the society. ( helping the orphans, poor people, visiting sick, giving much charity etc.)
