Surah Al Ma' ida Notes (87-89)

O you who have believed, do not prohibit the good things which Allah has made lawful to you and do not transgress. Indeed, Allah does not like transgressors.

And eat of what Allah has provided for you [which is] lawful and good. And fear Allah , in whom you are believers.

(5:87 & 88) There is no Monasticism | Monk hood | Sanyaas in Islam

This ayah was revealed about some of the Companions of the Prophet who said, "We  should cut off our male organs, abandon the desires of this life and travel in the land, just as the Ruhban (monks) do. When the prophet heard of this statement, he summoned them and asked them if they made this statement and they answered 'Yes'. The Prophet said, "I fast and break my fast, pray and sleep, and marry women. Whoever follows my Sunnah is of me, and whoever abandons my Sunnah is not of me.

Do not exaggerate and make it hard for yourself by prohibiting the permissible things. Do not transgress the limits by excessively indulging in permissible matters; only use of it what satisfies your needs and do not fall into extravagance.

And have Taqwa of Allah in all your affairs, obey Him and seek his pleasure and stay away from defiance and disobedience of Allah.

Allah will not impose blame upon you for what is meaningless in your oaths, but He will impose blame upon you for [breaking] what you intended of oaths. So its expiation is the feeding of ten needy people from the average of that which you feed your [own] families or clothing them or the freeing of a slave. But whoever cannot find [or afford it] - then a fast of three days [is required]. That is the expiation for oaths when you have sworn. But guard your oaths. Thus does Allah make clear to you His verses that you may be grateful.

(5:89) Unintentional Oaths refer to one's saying, "No by Allah," or, "Yes, by Allah " unintentionally. These come under the category of casual conversation.

Expiation for breaking the oath

  • Feed 10 poor people on the same scale as you would feed your own people.
Or,
  • Clothe them, each of the ten persons which is suitable enough to pray in.
Or,
  • Free a believing servant.
If you cannot afford the above conditions then,
  • Fast for three days.
